An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. It serves two main functions: host or network interface identification and location addressing.
IPv4 vs. IPv6
Most devices today still use IPv4 (e.g., 192.168.1.1), which limits the number of unique addresses to about 4.3 billion. IPv6 (e.g., 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334) was developed to solve this exhaustion problem, offering a virtually infinite number of addresses.
